Join Peggy Steffens at the Paton Center for Humminngbirds in Patagonia, Arizona on April 23rd at 8 AM for a morning of wildlife/bird photograpy. The Paton Center for Hummingbirds is a wildlife sanctuary operated by the Tucson Bird Alliance. They have numerous hummingbird and seed feeders that attract over 200 species of birds annually. We will hope to photograph the Violet-crowned hummingbird that is a speciality of the location. In recent years they have added a new parking lot, flush toilets and removed invasive plants and installed native gardens with walking trails. We will spend an hour or two photographing the feeder areas, brush piles and water features and then for anyone who is interested, we will select one of the trails to walk for other specialities of the area. If you are interested in going, email Peggy at peggysteffens1@gmail.com, and she will add you to the list. We will meet in front the main house to have an orientation for the morning. Please remember to wear sensible shoes, bring your camera, snack, hat, and water. We plan to spend about 3 hours taking photos. The Paton Center is located at 477 Pennsylvania Ave, Patagonia, AZ. There is no fee to enter The Paton Center for Hummingbirds, but you can donate to the “sugar fund” to help pay for the seeds and hummingbird food.

“Half the park is after dark” is a catchy slogan used by our national parks, and Royce Bair encourages people to discover this unique world with their photographic night vision.
During the past two decades, he has avoided crowds in public lands and found striking beauty and solitude in places that are often busy with tourists during the daytime. After dark, these locations reveal an entirely new world of photographic opportunity.
In his Going to the Dark Side presentation, Royce not only gets people excited about nightscapes, but also helps them discover new ways of seeing and strengthening their nighttime compositions. For photographers who have tried astro-landscape photography and found it challenging, the presentation breaks down technical barriers and makes the process more approachable, enjoyable, and rewarding.
Even experienced photographers who feel they have mastered the basics will find there is much more to learn. Advanced techniques shared in the presentation open up new creative possibilities and expand what is possible within the nightscape genre.
Royce Bair has been a professional magazine and advertising photographer for three decades. He is one of the early innovators of a genre of night photography often referred to as nightscapes and is frequently described as the founding father of landscape astrophotography. His images have received worldwide newspaper and magazine syndication.
Royce emphasizes that the foreground is just as important as the star-filled sky and often benefits from natural or artificial light enhancement to improve clarity and visual impact. Through lectures around the world, he has taught multiple approaches to achieving this, including techniques shared through his public service website focused on Low Level Lighting methods.
